The latest episode of the We're Not Really Here podcast delves into the ongoing legal battles between Manchester City and the Premier League.

Firstly, I am indebted to the genius of Kieran Maguire and Stefan Borson - two gentlemen who really understand the subject matter.

I know it is my job to understand, but I felt like many when reading the countless paragraphs across different articles and just wanted it all simplifying down. I am not legally-minded, I can't say particularly business-minded either, so I set out with the purpose of the podcast to try to have it spoken out - what's going on? And what does it all mean?

With the help of Maguire and Borson, I feel in 40 minutes (sorry, there was no chance of a "bitesize" podcast we are often told to produce on this one) we covered the important matters and questions.

We started by briefly outlining each case; what the 115 charges are, the scale of them and what associated party transactions (APT) are.

We learned why City feel APTs are unfair but at the same time how they have been operating under them during recent years, how it is a difficult case to win and where the law gets involved.

Then, with the 115 charges, we ask how close to the Uefa case of four years ago it all is and how all the issues could all play out.

Listeners were invited to ask their questions and I believe we got the answers you need to understand it all a bit easier.

Pass on to your friends, too. There are lines and topics of interest to many clubs outside of Manchester City.

The latest episode of BBC Radio Manchester's We're Not Really Here podcast examines the ongoing legal battles between Manchester City and the Premier League.

In February 2023, City were charged with 115 breaches of Premier League regulations - which the club strenuously denies.

Separately, City and the Premier League have been involved in a hearing surrounding the legality of the Premier League's associated party transaction (APT) rules, which determine whether sponsorship deals are financially "fair".

Football finance expert Kieran Maguire and lawyer Stefan Borson, who was also formerly a financial adviser to City, were asked whether there was any chance that City and the Premier League could reach a settlement before the 115 charges are heard.

Maguire said: "It would certainly save a lot of money on behalf of both sides. It could mean that both parties could claim a victory, but I think in terms of public opinion and the reaction there's likely to be from both the media, and I suspect from other clubs, it's not really something that would be palatable to the Premier League nor City."

Borson added: "There are ways in which it could occur within the Premier League rules. But I think they missed their window for a settlement. Now that it's public and now that we're so close to the hearing, it would be very unlikely for them to find common ground politically to get this settled."

Defending champions Argentina kicked off their Copa America campaign with a 2-0 win over Canada on Thursday night.

A number of Premier League stars featured in their line-up, Manchester City's Julian Alvarez opening the scoring from Liverpool's Alexis Mac Allister's assist before Inter's Lautaro Martinez sealed the win late on.

Aston Villa's Emi Martinez kept a clean sheet with Cristian Romero of Tottenham and Manchester United's Lisandro Martinez in front of him.

Giovani Lo Celso also of Spurs came on for the last quarter but United's Alejandro Garnacho and Chelsea's Enzo Fernandez remained unused.

  5. What will Southgate do with Foden?published at 12:04 20 June

Man City - Transfer news, results, fixtures, video and audio (8)

Gareth Southgate's England squad selection for Euro 2024 received widespread approval for being bold and courageous - and yet he is still revisiting a debate stretching back two decades.

It is a conversation that returns to the era when England's then-manager Sven-Goran Eriksson failed to cash in what looked like a golden ticket stamped with the names of Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard and Paul Scholes.

Eriksson's star-struck approach led him to pack his team with England's best individuals rather than shape a fully-functioning balanced side, a forced and flawed strategy that left the so-called "Golden Generation" unfulfilled at international level while sweeping up major prizes regularly with their clubs.

It ended with a disillusioned Scholes, wasted on the left flank at Euro 2004 in Portugal, calling time early on his international career, a world-class operator with Manchester United marginalised by England.

And now there are hints of old arguments being raked over once more as England continue their Euro 2024 campaign against Denmark in Frankfurt on Thursday.

Southgate is not at the Eriksson stage yet - indeed he may never reach it - but he will be aware of the growing volume of the discussion around Manchester City's Phil Foden, England's young superstar Jude Bellingham and the make-up of his midfield elsewhere.

All the indications backstage in Frankfurt suggested Southgate will keep faith with Foden in the mainly left flank role he filled against Serbia, with Liverpool's Trent Alexander-Arnold alongside Declan Rice in the centre.

It has not silenced the argument and the noise increased after Foden - the Footballer of the Year with 27 goals as Manchester City secured a fourth successive league title - cut a peripheral figure in England's opening Euro 2024 win against Serbia in Gelsenkirchen, while Bellingham was the dominant personality in all aspects, scoring the decisive goal.

    10:53 20 June

Former England centre-back Conor Coady believes Gareth Southgate could make "one or two changes" for Thursday's game against Denmark, as the debate over whether Phil Foden should start continues to roll.

"We are all looking at this England team and thinking 'how do we get the best out of Foden,' he told BBC Radio 5 Live's Football Daily podcast. "But it might be down to what is best for the team.

"I do not know what Southgate will go with, but I get the feeling there might be one or two changes and that feels like the most obvious area they will be in.

"We have to get the best out of Foden because he is an incredible footballer.

"He needs to be firing alongside Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane if England want to make the knockout stages and progress."

The first round of fixtures at Euro 2024 are complete and a number of players have already caught the eye in Germany.

Belgium's Jeremy Doku finished his first season with Manchester City in fine form, scoring one goal and making eight assists in his final eight league games while putting in some dazzling displays.

Stats from Opta and Uefa show that he looks to have carried that level straight into international duty, despite Belgium's shock defeat by Slovakia.

The 22-year-old put in a strong performance and had the most touches in the opposition box (12) of any player in the opening round of group games.

The tricky winger also had the most successful dribbles with six and, showing his pace, came second in the list of top speeds registered at 35.3 km/h - just 0.6 km/h slower than Romania's Valentin Mihaila.

England full-back Kyle Walker has said he is blocking out any "outside noise" during Euro 2024 and joked that the person whose opinion of his performances he values the most is his mother.

Before Thursday's group game against Denmark, Walker and England manager Gareth Southgate were asked at a news conference about how the team are engaged with traditional and social media during the tournament in Germany.

Southgate said there is probably a mix of some players who "take a similar approach" to him in not looking at it, while others "will definitely look at stuff" - but he added: "Our assessment of the game is the most important and we're never slow to pull things up that aren't right or aren't good enough."

Manchester City captain Walker said: "I don't read it at all. I feel that we all can play football. I call it the top 10% that's going to separate you from being a very good player or an average player.

"If you have outside noise - whether that be positive or negative - people take it in different ways.

"I'd rather not see it and just concentrate on what's in camp, what the gaffer says, mainly what my mum says - my mum always tells me I have a good game! So I'll listen to her and go from that really."

There has been much said and written about Phil Foden's display in England's 1-0 win over Serbia on Sunday, but stats from Uefa show he covered the second-greatest distance of any player during the first round of group matches at Euro 2024.

Only Serbia's Sergey Milinkovic-Savic (13.9km) covered more ground than Manchester City's Foden (13.2km), while England colleagues Declan Rice of Arsenal (12.9km) and Kieran Trippier of Newcastle United (12.3km) were fifth and eighth in the list respectively.

City's Bernardo Silva was seventh with a total of 12.7km in Portugal's 2-1 win over Czech Republic, while Czech captain Tomas Soucek of West Ham was 10th, covering 12.3km.

The fixtures for the new Premier League season are out and we asked you for your predictions on where Manchester City will be after 10 games.

Here is a selection of your comments:

Chris: We'll be in the top two after 10 games.

Carl: It's quite a tough start for the champions, therefore I can see them dropping points in the first 10 games. I am predicting them losing twice and drawing a couple of other games. But as long as they are in the top eight, the other clubs know they are still to be feared!

Morena: After 10 games, City will be in third but go on to lift the trophy.

Abdullah: I am really happy with this. We have an easier start than we did in the previous seasons so, instead of switching on in the second part of the season, maybe we can be amazing throughout. Potential Treble or maybe even, dare I say it, quadruple? A bit too early to assume.

Simon: Probably not top, but at the end of the season when it counts, champions again. Five in a row.

Chelsea and champions Manchester City will open their Premier League campaigns with a meeting at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, 18 August.

Chelsea are winless in their past six Premier League meetings with City (D2 L4) since a 2-1 away win in May 2021, but contributed to a thrilling 4-4 in this same fixture last season.

Since losing 1-0 in the Champions League final in May 2021, City are unbeaten in their past nine meetings with Chelsea in all competitions (W7 D2) - their joint-longest run without defeat against the Blues in their history (also nine between 1936 and 1949).

Enzo Maresca's first game in charge of the Blues will be the first time Chelsea have begun a top-flight campaign with a match against the reigning champions since 1971-72, when they lost 3-0 against Arsenal at Highbury.

City have won their opening Premier League match in 12 of the past 13 seasons, with the exception being a 1-0 loss at Tottenham in 2021-22.

According to Opta, Manchester City have the easiest final 10 fixtures of the season.

Aftrer the 15 March, they will only face three teams that finished in the top half of last season's table - Crystal Palace, Manchester United and Aston Villa.

West Ham have the next easiest run-in, again only facing three top-half teams in their final 10 games - Liverpool, Tottenham and Manchester United.

At the other end of the spectrum, Fulham have the toughest run-in, with six of their final 10 games coming against sides who qualified for Europe last season.

Let's face it, for Manchester City, the fixture list represents the obstacle that stands between them and immortality.

No team had ever won four league titles in a row before last season. How long would it take another club to win five if that is what they are to achieve in 2024-25?

Of more importance is the question mark over Pep Guardiola.

Will this be the last season at City for one of the greatest managers in the entire history of the game?

I was mesmerised by 'The Last Dance' the documentary about Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls and their era of dominance - is next season going to be Pep's equivalent?

City start with a trip to face a Chelsea side managed by Pep's old coach Enzo Maresca.

It will be a fascinating duel. But not as fascinating as the season as a whole.

What should you look out for?

By chief football news reporter Simon Stone

    Matches around European games

This will be even more keenly assessed than usual given the four clubs in the Champions League and two in the Europa League will have eight first-phase games rather than six. Long trips before or after European games do not go down well with managers.

    Matches around internationals

There are international breaks in September, October, November and March. In Europe, the first three of those are for Nations League fixtures. World Cup qualifiers in Europe start in March 2025, though in South America and Asia they are being played in all four windows.

England managers tend not to be keen on blockbuster league matches immediately before a break and club bosses are equally unhappy at having to play key matches after them when so many players get back on Thursday or Friday.

    Festive fixtures

To allow for a mid-August start, there will not be a winter break this season. The Premier League has assured clubs they will not be asked to play twice in less than 60 hours at any point over Christmas and New Year. That rules out any club playing on 26 December also having a game on 28 December. There will be no Christmas Eve fixture in the 2024-25 season.

As the FA Cup third round has been moved from its traditional home on the first weekend of January to the second, it does seem there will be four rounds of fixtures over the festive period - starting on 21 December and ending on 5 January.

    New managers

Four Premier League clubs already have new managers - Fabian Hurzeler (Brighton), Enzo Maresca (Chelsea), Arne Slot (Liverpool) and Julen Lopetegui (West Ham) - with a fifth to come at Leicester. So that's a new era beginning at 25% of clubs before a ball has been kicked. Russell Martin will take charge of a top-flight game for the first time after Southampton's promotion.

    16:22 17 June

Former Manchester City defender Nedum Onuoha has called for some "perspective" from supporters and pundits who have been "making a comparison" between England midfielders Phil Foden and Jude Bellingham.

Speaking to BBC Sport's Simon Stone, Onuoha said of Foden's display in Sunday's win over Serbia: "Attacking-wise, it was nowhere near his best performance. However, if he hadn't been defensively good, I think England would have suffered.

"To keep a clean sheet at the Euros and not give up massive chances, that takes a collective. I think the collective deserves to be given credit and there also needs to be perspective.

"They will be doing things within the games that are geared towards winning. One of his best touches in the game came when he defended a cross, brought it down and then just volleyed it 60 yards forward."

Former England Under-21 defender Onuoha also criticised the negativity that he believes surrounds the national team, stating: "I think we have a lot of critique for a nation that hasn't really done well, overall, on this stage.

"Considering how many times we have said 'it needs to be this way' or 'it needs to be that way' - it never seems to have worked out up to this point.

"I think the critique comes from anxiety because the fans want to feel comfortable when watching a game of football.

"It is always a case of 'why aren't we beating these guys by more [goals]?' Well, realistically, if you look at international football, that just does not happen."
